Thought home taping was dead? Think again...

As the music industry continues to target ISPs and P2P networks in their anti-piracy crusade, it appears to be ignoring a growing movement that has a particularly retro attitude.

In the late 70s, when the latest must-have was a cassette deck, and blank tapes started to come down in price, the music industry freaked out at the thought of people recording songs from the radio or - heaven forbid - each other's vinyl albums. Their brutally direct Home Taping Is Killing Music campaign was launched but no one really took any notice, and the Home Taping Is Skill In Music backlash meant that more bedroom tapes were made than ever before and new talent flourished.

From iTunes to the iPlayer, you might think that you don't need to record anything anymore. It's just out there, all the time, waiting to be Googled. But the hunter-gatherer instinct is alive and well.

The early days of "taping" audio from the web were much like the radio recording sessions of our youth. Systems like Total Recorder would sit on your desktop with a simple set of record, play and pause buttons, saving any audio that went through your system. This time last year, Applian Technologies went one stage further. Their Replay A/V has added stream capture (going straight to the heart of an online radio station and pulling the audio feed) and tackled what most people do with the music they record - share it with friends - by adding a simple button to send MP3 recordings via YouSendIt.

The ability to rip live radio streams has been around for years but it was only the arrival of the BBC's Listen Again that there was something really worth recording. As a result, a few enterprising individuals have written software purely for saving BBC radio streams, like Alion Systems' BBC Radio Ripper.

For the myriad of other live radio out there, possibly the best tool is ChiliRec, which came out last month. You select the stations you like and it does the rest: recording all of them, all the time, chopping up the tracks and saving them to playlists for listening to later.

YouTube has brought countless archive recordings back into the open, but they don't all stay online forever. Recording YouTube videos straight to your hard drive is quite straightforward, though, and the latest version of RealPlayer puts a little Download This Video box at the top of any clip. From there it takes just a few clicks to burn it to DVD or drag videos on to an iPod.

Orbit Downloader (version 2.7.1 has just been released) goes one stage further, popping up a Get It button when you listen to music on social network sites, allowing you to record music straight from MySpace, Bebo, IMEEM and Pandora.

This social aspect always was the essence of taping music. Only the most anally retentive collectors do it for themselves. Everyone else does it to spread the word about what they like, or to try and make a statement about themselves to others. Which means that perhaps the best new product for saving internet audio is also the simplest and most romantic: Suck UK's new Mix Tape USB Stick.

Beyonce Knowles - Beyonce Jay-zs Post-party Burger

Newlyweds BEYONCE KNOWLES and JAY-Z shunned the posh food at New York's Costume Institute Gala on Monday night (05May08) - instead heading off to a local burger joint after the event.

The stars - who wed in a secret ceremony last month (Apr08) - walked the red carpet at the city's Metropolitan Museum and attended the glitzy fashion party.

After they left, they decided to pick up dinner on their way home, stopping at a fast food restaurant to buy cheeseburgers and fries.

And, even though the restaurant was closed, staff opened their doors after-hours to serve the couple.

A source tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "Pop Burger had just closed. There was a loud knock on the door, and Jay and Bey, who was still in her ball gown, were at the door with their Maybach (car) waiting."

The Ting Tings want label to drop them now

The Ting Tings have apparently asked their label Columbia to drop them so they have subject matter for their second album.

According to The Daily Star, drummer Jules De Martino reckons their album which is apparently leading the midweek charts will be hard to follow up.

Possibly hoping their label Columbia won't take note, De Martino joked: "We ripped up the rulebook for the first album. I think the second album will be really hard, so I've already asked the label to drop us again so we'll have something to write about."

The duo were previously in Manchester band Dear Eskimo, who were dropped by their label Mercury, which made the pair nervous about signing up again.

De Martino explained: "When it came to putting pen to paper we panicked. It was horrible. I fled to the Scottish highlands for a week and Katie hid at her mum's so they couldn't find us."

Oprah Winfrey - Oprah Cancels Big Give

Talk show host OPRAH WINFREY has cancelled her charity spectacular OPRAH'S BIG GIVE.

The show, which recently completed its first run on U.S. network ABC, invited 10 members of the public to battle over who could find the best and most unusual ways to raise money for a selection of good causes.

During its month-long run, the show generated millions of dollars for charity; and included celebrity guest appearances from superstars Jennifer Aniston and John Travolta.

ABC were desperate to tie Winfrey down for a second season - but the media queen has said no.

Network boss Steven MCPherson tells the New York Post, "We loved that show and absolutely would have loved to bring it back. But it was something Oprah didn't want to do."

Naomi Campbell lashes out at fashion industry

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has said the fashion industry is more racist than ever and has hit out at the lack of black faces on magazine covers and catwalks.
Speaking to The London Paper, the Streatham-born Campbell said: "Women of colour are not a trend. That's the bottom line. It's a pity that people don't always appreciate black beauty."
She added: "In some instances, black models are being sidelined by major modelling agencies. Fashion needs to go back to the way it used to be when wonderful designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Gianni Versace and Azzedine Alaia had a great line-up of beautiful women - white, black, Chinese, Hispanic."
Campbell, 37, admitted that her supermodel friends helped her career by taking a stand against racism.
"Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington would go to big designers and say, 'If you don't pick Naomi to be in your show, then I don't want to be in it'", she recalled.
Talking about how she received one of her biggest career breaks in the fashion industry she said: "The only reason I got the cover of French Vogue was because Yves Saint Laurent called up and told them he'd pull his ads if they didn't."
The star spoke out after her former boss admitted racism was still rife in the industry.
Carole White, head of the Premier model agency, who represented Campbell for 17 years, said: "A black girl has to be perfect to get work. The bookers are told, 'Don't send any ethnic girls'."
She added: "I showed a picture of a new black girl to an agent in Milan, and he actually recoiled. He said, 'We don't have black girls in Milan. It's impossible.'"
Speaking about her former client she said: "Black models never make money. Even Naomi Campbell didn't make money like the white girls did, she was always offered less."
